Camper Stunned by Kangaroos ‘Walking on Water’ at Australian Beach

A video of kangaroos “floating” on water at a beachfront campsite in Australia has gone viral on TikTok.
The clip was shared by @sazzletoc and has garnered over 749,000 views since it was posted on September 25.
The footage, captured at the Habitat Noosa campsite, shows a group of kangaroos moving in a line, one after the other. They are shown hopping across the water along a sandy coast under a clear blue morning sky.
A caption shared with the post reads: “Winter camping flashback. The best morning wake up.”
Perched on the edge of Lake Cootharaba with over 500 meters of beachfront, Habitat Noosa is located around 25 minutes from Noosa in the Australian state of Queensland.
The Noosa region, on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast on the east coast of Australia, is a UNESCO-designated Biosphere Reserve. It is home to 3,023 wildlife species—more than 700 of which are native—from kangaroos and glossy black cockatoos to possums, echidna and flying foxes, according to Visit Noosa, the website of Tourism Noosa, the official tourism organization for the region.
According to UNESCO, around 1.65 million tourists vacation within and near the reserve, and they undertake “only certain activities that are healthy for the environment, such as birdwatching and nature hikes.”
A November 2021 study in Ecological Management & Restoration notes that”kangaroos are a much-loved national emblem but also variously viewed as an asset or a pest. Some species are also abundant, with numbers markedly increasing since European settlement.”
According to the Australian government website, in 2011, there were reported to be a total of 20,345,243 kangaroos in the commercial harvest areas.
“As a result of drought, it has been estimated that Queensland’s kangaroo population fell by about 9 million between 2013 and 2018, while the New South Wales the population fell by about 7 million between 2014 and 2019,” the study said.
